History of the Wee Book Inn

Wee Book Inn Enterprises Ltd. was started in Edmonton in 1971 by Darwin Luxford. The first store on Whyte Avenue was very small, seven feet wide by thirty feet deep, hence the "Wee" in our name. Within three months of opening, business was so good that people lined up to get in the door. Darwin quickly negotiated for space next door, and the resulting store became a fixture on Whyte Avenue, and our flagship store.
Over the years, many changes have been made in the company, most out of necessity for improvement. However, some were forced upon us. Fire completely destroyed our North Side location on 118th Avenue in December 1990. Three weeks later, another fire next to the Whyte Avenue location caused irreparable structural damage to the building, leaving us no choice but to demolish and rebuild.
These setbacks, while devastating at the time, have been used as opportunities to improve and expand the company. Within three months of the fires, we reopened in a new North Side location on 118th Avenue. In August of 1991, construction began on a new Whyte Avenue store, and it opened in March of 1992. There are now four Wee Book Inns in Edmonton, and two in Calgary.
