A Brief History of Wee Book Inn
The Wee Book Inn was started in Edmonton in 1971 by Edmontonian Darwin Luxford. Our first store on scenic Whyte Avenue was very, very small, a mere seven feet wide by thirty feet deep. This served to inspire the "Wee" in our name, and despite our future expansion, the name stuck. Within three months of opening, business was so good that people lined up down the block to get in the door. Darwin quickly negotiated for more space next door, and our flagship store became a fixture on Whyte Avenue.
From there, the Wee Book Inn expanded during the 1980s with 4 more locations spread out around the Edmonton. Our original 124 St location closed when we moved further west, to a location on Stony Plain Road, serving the growing city. Locations opened Downtown and on 118 Ave to serve these booming areas. During this time, we began to offer an even greater selection of books for our customers, thanks to our expanding floor space.
Problems did befall the Wee Book Inn, however, when two devastating fires destroyed both our flagship store on Whyte Ave and our North Side location in December 1990. The damage to our flagship store on Whyte Ave was so severe that our original building had to be demolished. We didn’t let this hold us back, and within three months we opened a new North Side location very near our old location on 118 Avenue. In August of 1991, construction began on a new Whyte Avenue store, which opened in March 1992, the Wee Book Inn re-established itself as a permanent fixture in Old Strathcona.
Continually expanding our selection of books, movies, and music, we constantly strive to better serve our customers. And you, our customers, have responded by voting the Wee Book Inn the best used bookstore in Edmonton by the people of Edmonton for nearly decade. We look forward to serving you for another 40 years.
